The skills and knowledge I gained
I gained a better understanding of photoshop, Microsoft and data entry programs. Gaining both better skills and knowledge in graphic design, typing and processing information better. I also got to understand what a real work environment consists of, giving me an experience that could help me gain familiarity when I receive a job.
The impact of the experience on your career goals and plans
The whole experience of trying to find work placement to studying media and communication at tafe have really changed my career goals. I have decided that the industry is too cut throat for me, jobs in the area are diminishing and I don't believe I have the drive or the ego to work in this particular field.
My experience of work placement
Although I wasn't planning to work with my mum I found the work experience hard but gratifying. I came into the office with no worries but I was soon put to work spending all day in front of a computer. I first started the day writing up documents and roster sheets that needed to be completed and sent them out to all the staff members rostered on next week. There was pressure to make sure there were no mistakes as this could result in staff not turning up for work or confusion of days and hours staff were supposed to work. Then I was told to create an advert for APCare and place it onto seek.com. I found the task to be very difficult as I don't have much experience creating adverts but the ladies in the office were so nice offering me advice and helping me when I asked for it.
What I learnt through work experience
I learnt that the media industry is very cut throat, you need to be confident and outgoing to really be heard or seen. Also you can't do tasks sloppy you have to do them correctly. I learnt new and improved skills on photoshop and using the computer in general. Also keeping to deadlines and the pressure to stay on top of your work.
Feedback I received
Emma Munro presented herself impeccably and was punctual. She was courteous and lovely to have in the office. The tasks that were assigned to Emma were performed perfectly and we would have no hesitations in employing Emma in the future.
